A Mauritius family office can provide a
coordinated platform for administering family investments, managing complex
cross-border assets, establishing governance arrangements and planning
intergenerational wealth transfers. Mauritius combines a dedicated regulatory
framework with access to corporate, fiduciary and professional services for
internationally active families.
What is a Family Office?
A single family office (SFO) is organised
around the affairs of one qualifying family. A multiple family office (MFO)
serves multiple qualifying families through a professionally managed platform.
The family office may work alongside trusts, foundations, holding companies and
investment vehicles; these are complementary structures rather than
interchangeable licences.
Principal Services and Features
Depending on its approved scope, a family
office may coordinate investment oversight, administration of family assets and
estates, consolidated reporting, cash-flow and risk monitoring, succession
planning, family constitutions and governance, philanthropy, tax and legal
coordination, and selected lifestyle or concierge support. Investment
management or other separately regulated services must be undertaken only where
properly authorised.
Key Benefits
A centralised family office can improve
oversight across jurisdictions, enhance reporting and accountability, clarify
decision-making between generations, facilitate succession planning, coordinate
professional advisers and help maintain continuity during changes in family
leadership. Mauritius also provides a recognised regulatory environment and
proximity to investment opportunities in Africa and Asia. Outcomes depend on
each family’s circumstances, the structure and applicable foreign laws.
Licensing and Establishment Requirements
The Financial Services (Family
Office) Rules 2026 took effect on 1 June 2026, replacing the 2020 Rules. New
applications are subject to the 2026 framework; existing licensees have a
transition period ending 31 December 2026. ·
Core family-office services are
subject to FSC licensing. Providers conducting only ancillary services may fall
outside mandatory family-office licensing, although other regulatory
permissions may still apply. ·
The licence holder must be an
eligible corporation, a concept that can include qualifying companies,
partnerships, trusts or foundations. Applications may be submitted through a
management company. ·
An SFO must meet the applicable
USD 5 million asset threshold; under the 2026 rules no prescribed minimum
capital is specified for SFOs. ·
An MFO must meet at least USD 5
million in assets for each family and USD 25 million in aggregate, and minimum
capital of USD 50,000. ·
The FSC assesses governance,
suitable personnel, risk management, AML/CFT controls, confidentiality,
cybersecurity and data protection. MFOs must address conflicts of interest and
segregation between families. Physical presence and staffing should be evaluated
against current licensing criteria and the proposed activities.
Tax Considerations
Mauritius has offered qualifying family
offices tax incentives, including a ten-income-year holiday under published
scheme guidance. However, tax eligibility depends on the current Income Tax
Act, licensing date, substance, staffing and other applicable conditions. The
2026 regulatory reforms make older promotional brochures unreliable for some
licensing thresholds. LGBS should verify the precise tax incentive with the MRA
and specialist advisers before stating an unconditional entitlement on its
website. Foreign tax, controlled foreign company, reporting and
exchange-control rules may apply to family members and assets.
Who Should Consider a Mauritius Family Office?
International entrepreneurial families;
founders planning a business succession; families with diversified investments
across countries; high-net-worth families seeking a central reporting and
governance function; and families considering a combination of Mauritius
trusts, foundations, holding entities and investment funds.
